Waking Up: Finding Peace and Sustainability in a Burnt Out World

By Susan Lee

Meditation with Waking Up App

I’m a skeptic when it comes to “life-changing tools,” not only because self-help is a $10 billion dollar industry with many self-elected “gurus” claiming to change your life, but also because these tools, courses, coaching, and products all sell the same thing in a hundred different ways.

So, when I saw the $130/year app on my iPhone, I cringed. But because it was highly recommended by someone I respect, I decided to try it. It also helped that the app received glowing 5-star reviews.

At first glance, Waking Up might seem like just another meditation app, promising to help you find peace and clarity in a world that never slows down. But as I delved deeper into its teachings and practices, I realized that it offers so much more than a momentary escape from the noise.

Broken up into short meditation sessions and lessons about life and philosophy, you can listen to as many or as few as you want. I chose to do at least one meditation in the morning paired with one lesson or theory at night.

Sam Harris, a neuroscientist, author, and creator of Waking Up, meets you where you are and ensures that with practice, you’ll learn to think clearly, be more mindful, and be at peace no matter the external circumstances. It’s interesting to think how hard it is to accomplish such a simple practice on our own. And sometimes, we need help.

Almost everyone I know struggles to navigate the same fast-paced world of juggling work, personal life, and the pressure to succeed. It's a struggle that many of us face daily, and it often feels like there's no escape from the relentless grind.

Through its guided meditations and thought-provoking lessons, Waking Up has forced me to confront the bigger questions in life - questions about purpose, meaning, and the nature of existence itself. It has challenged me to reframe my daily actions and to consider the impact they have not only on myself but on the world around me.

Waking Up has helped me develop a greater sense of self-awareness and resilience by teaching me to observe my thoughts and emotions without judgment. I've learned to appreciate the present moment, instead of worrying about the future or dwelling on the past.

At the very least, I am reminded every day to breathe.

But the most significant impact that Waking Up has had on my life is the way it has reframed my understanding of sustainability.

In a world that is increasingly focused on environmental sustainability, it's easy to forget that true sustainability starts with ourselves. We can’t hope to save the planet if we can’t first save ourselves from modern life's mental and emotional toll.

Through its teachings, Waking Up has shown me that taking care of my own mental health isn’t a selfish act, but rather an important part of building a more sustainable world.

When we take care of ourselves, we lay the foundation for a more compassionate and connected world.

If you're ready to embark on your own journey of self-discovery and sustainability, I encourage you to give Waking Up a try. I’m not an affiliate or making any income from this promotion. It’s simply a tool I honestly believe has made me a better person.

You can download the app from the App Store or Google Play Store, or visit their website at https://wakingup.com/. Who knows? It might be just the tool to help you start your journey of inner peace.
